Description

DIKTYNNA - Upgrading the Energy Footprint of the University of Crete and the National Health Data Centre of GRNET

The DIKTYNNA project aims to upgrade the energy footprint of the daily operation of the University of Crete’s infrastructure and the area under its responsibility, and the production of energy with photovoltaics and for the building complex of the White buildings in the Knossos premises where the National Health Data Centre of GRNET is installed.

The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the reduction of the annual primary energy consumption of public buildings are strategic objectives for both the University of Crete and GRNET.

The DIKTYNNA project includes the implementation of:

  • Energy upgrading and energy saving interventions in the building "Student Center" and in the building of the Department of Computer Science at the Vouton Campus, as well as in building B of the White Building complex at the Knossos campus
  • Actions for the use of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) for the energy coverage of the above-mentioned buildings
  • Actions to promote sustainable mobility to meet the transport needs of the University's administrative and teaching staff
  • Policies and practices for monitoring, measuring and evaluating the performance of the above actions

Addressing the problem of the release of air pollutants and greenhouse gases from the DIKTYNNA project is in the spirit of the Paris Agreement (which succeeded the Kyoto Protocol). The approach is holistic as it includes the following actions:

  1. Measures and policies to reduce heat losses from buildings and reduce energy consumption
  2. Measures and actions to monitor and evaluate policies and measures which reduce heat loss and consumption
  3. Supply part of the energy needs of the University and the National Health Data Centre operated by GRNET in the University building in Voutes with Renewable Energy Sources (RES)
  4. Use of electric vehicles to serve the transportation needs of the administrative and educational staff of the University, which will be offered free of charge within the internal road network of the Campus as well as between the beneficiary's buildings outside the boundaries of the Campus and to and from the Campus.
