GRNET organizations are geographically dispersed across the entire Greek territory. Many of them have multiple points of presence, which in many cases are located in different cities or even geographical departments.
GRNET has network nodes in many cities, in order to cover the interconnection needs of its organizations. The existing network nodes gradually increase in order to meet the needs, of a larger number of organizations as well as the more isolated ones and their departments/sections. At these network nodes, GRNET hosts optical, network, computer and storage equipment.
Most network nodes are installed inside premises of OTE, usually one node in each city of the region. In some cases, network nodes operate in the premises of Organizations that are located within the GRNET fiber network. Each GRNET network node unites the access lines of the adjacent organizations and is interconnected with the adjacent GRNET nodes through the fiber optic network.
GRNET also maintains access switches in organizations premises connected with self-owned optical fiber, thus creating a rich network of points of presence throughout Greece. Access to these points requires the consent of the organization that hosts the access switch.
