Infrastructures

The GRNET network covers the entire Greek territory with more than 9,000 km of optical fibers and modern optical equipment, providing superhigh-speed connections to the Greek and international Internet. It interconnects all Universities, Higher Ecclesiastic Academies, Research Centers, the Panhellenic School Network, as well as large public hospitals, Museums and Libraries. It serves approximately 500,000 users on a daily basis.

The GRNET installed network nodes and points- of-presence are increasing, covering the needs of more and more remote organizations or sections/departments thereof.

At the same time, GRNET implements and operates computing electronic infrastructure through its advanced – and eco- friendly – data centers (Data Centers). Such infrastructures support the provision of advanced computing services.

In June 2015, the first national high-performance computing system (HPC) was launched to support large-scale scientific applications. The infrastructure is integrated into PRACE, the European Supercomputer Ecosystem and plays a key role in the development and promotion of scientific research both in the country and in Southeastern Europe.

The development of the infrastructure offered by GRNET, is designed based on the respect for the environment. Thus, it develops tools for monitoring energy consumption at point-of-presence and Data Centers.
