The CRAFT OA (Creating a Robust Accessible Federated Technology for Open Access) project aims to improve the technical and organisational infrastructure of the Diamond Open Access (OA) publishing model, in which authors can publish for free, as long as universities, research institutions or libraries provide the necessary technological infrastructure. The project will contribute to improving the levels of professionalism and maturity required in today's publishing landscape for open access publications, which are central to interdisciplinary communication, as they provide unrestricted access to scientific publications, and are characterised by great diversity. To achieve that level of improvement, the project will focus on 4 threads of activities:
- Providing technical improvements for journal platforms and software
- Creating communities of practice to promote overall infrastructure improvements
- Increase in the rate of visibility, discoverability and recognition for Diamond OA publishing.
- Integration of the Diamond OA publishing model with the European Science Cloud (ESOC) and other large-scale data aggregators
The implementation of the project's objectives will benefit the landscape of the Diamond OA publishing model, which in its current state is still fragmented and not always technically sound in order to fully develop its potential for science and society. The project will increase the acceptance, harmonisation, establishment and recognition of the existing technological standards and processes that prevail in Diamond OA publishing, contributing to its consolidation. The role of GRNET, as an affiliated entity of EGI.eu, will include the following:
- Diamond Discovery Hub (DDH): Contribution to the definition of the requirements, technical architecture, interoperability framework and best practices regarding the Authentication & Authorization infrastructure (AAI) needs for access to Open Access content and Institutional Professional Service Provider (IPSP) and IPIP tools.
- Single Sign-On access to services and content (creation of a community federated AAI proxy service that IPSPs and IPIPs can use to connect their services:
- Provide an Authentication & Authorization infrastructure (AAI) service compatible with the EOSC's AAI infrastructure to control access to services and content offered by IPSPs and institutional publishing technology providers (IPTPs)
- Provide technical support for the trial interconnection of services of selected IPTP providers
