Description

TransEuroOGS is an infrastructure project that aims to strengthen European strategic sovereignty through the ultra-secure communications technology of Quantum Key Dristrinution (QKD) and the integration of satellite and terrestrial links as part of the EAGLE-1 mission.

In a unique range of geographical locations and local ecosystems spanning from northwestern to central and southeastern Europe, the project will bring together developments in optical ground stations and their connection to local terrestrial fiber networks in Ireland, Luxembourg, Germany and Greece.

These efforts will be merged into an interoperability demonstration in quantum key distribution (QKD) using the resources of the Eagle-1 mission and the connection to local fiber optic networks in use-cases linking OGS sites across Europe.

The TransEuroOGS project is aligned with the EU's strategic priorities for the development of secure quantum communications, supporting the EuroQCI initiative. At the national level, the action reinforces the implementation of the Greek National Quantum Communication Infrastructure (HellasQCI) and the corresponding national infrastructures in Germany (Q-net-Q), Luxembourg (Lux4QCI) and Ireland (IrelandQCI). Synergies with existing actions, such as Greek Obs2OGS and other ESA programs (e.g., ScyLight, SAGA, HydRON), ensure the integrated use of terrestrial and satellite connections, strengthening European technological leadership in the field of quantum communications.

Finally, strengthening cooperation between Member States, research institutes

and government bodies, such as GRNET, HSC, Fraunhofer IOF, FAU, UniLu, and WIT

will contribute to the development of high-security infrastructure and help achieve the objectives of

EuroQCI.

The role of GRNET in the project involves participating in the implementation of the following objectives:

  • Operation and management
  • Development of OGS interfaces
  • Integration with the Eagle-1 receiver
  • Development of KMS (Key Management System) architecture for secure cryptographic key management
  • Validation, certification, and training
  • Use case development
  • Interoperability demonstration
