GRNET has optical equipment installed in 87 locations in Greece which can serve 10G/40G /100G connections. The connections between the nodes are implemented via GRNET’s dark fibers.

The nodes offer in total 44-channel ROADM cards, while the main nodes offer additional Colorless – Directionless features using tunable filters (TFA_8) and divider / combiner units (SP_CE4_2). Such additional functionality allows the administrator to re-route connections via the NMS, but also to change the channel where appropriate, without the need for a field presence. Finally, the option of protection at the optical level (IOP) is given, in specific connections of MAN networks.

Colorless – Directionless

  • Trunk: EIE, Koletti, Heraklion, Patra, Thessaloniki, Louros (Epirus)
    • Institutions: AUTh, Demokritos, EATI, EKPA, FORTH, YPAITH, NTUA, UOC, UPATRAS DWDM equipment is from ECI company and includes three different types of shelves: • OPT9624L (15RUs) – installed at nodes offering services
    • OPT9603 (2RUs) – installed at reinforcement nodes
    • Artemis-2A (2RUs) – expansion passive shelf for cards that do not need power (eg multiplexers, DCFs, Splitters)

 Customer Cards

The main customer cards installed are as follows:

  • TR10_4: 10G transponder that matches two client signals in G.709 and transmits colored signals to the network.
  • TR10_12: high density 10Gbps transponder matching up to six client signals in G.709 and transmits the colored signals to the network.
  • CMR100: multi-service combination card that supports 10 x10G LAN / STM 64 / OC 192 / FC10 / FC8 / OTU 2 / OTU 2e to OTU 4V. Reduces the number of wavelengths, increases capacity and simplifies management, and can be used in metropolitan/trunk networks but also in long distance networks.
  • TR100M: multi-service transponder that supports Diverse Polarized – Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (DP-QPSK). It maps the client’s signal based on G.709 and transmits a colored signal to the network.

All three types of equipment are managed through LightShoft NMS / STMS whereby the user can implement and modify optical connections, monitor alarms and statistics necessary for supervising the network. Moreover, through the application, “alarm forwarder”, alerts in the form of email or sms can be received.
