GRNET Chairman and Professor Emeritus at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Stefanos Kollias, appeared on the INDEX program on Naftemporiki TV with journalist Christina Kousouni on June 24, where he highlighted the strategic importance of the DAIDALOS supercomputer and the Greek AI Factory Pharos for the development of artificial intelligence and the promotion of research and innovation in Greece.

As S. Kollias pointed out, the arrival of the DAEDALUS supercomputer at the Lavrio Technology and Cultural Park and the start of its installation process mark a significant milestone for the country. Upon completion of the project, Greece will acquire one of the most advanced High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructures, strengthening its presence in the European ecosystem of advanced computing infrastructures.

DAEDALUS will provide cutting-edge computing power to universities, research centers, small and medium-sized enterprises, and startups, enabling them to develop innovative applications and services without relying on large international commercial cloud computing platforms. The goal is to strengthen research and development, accelerate the generation of new knowledge, and create high-value-added products and services.

During the interview, Mr. Kollias emphasized that DAEDALUS is the key pillar of AI Factory Pharos, the Greek artificial intelligence factory that is part of the European AI Factories network. Through this initiative,, Greece is playing an active role in shaping the European artificial intelligence ecosystem, contributing to the development of applications in high-priority sectors such as health, the Greek language and culture, as well as sustainability.

As he explained, the new infrastructure will enable the development of advanced artificial intelligence models that will leverage large datasets to support scientific research, accelerate medical and pharmaceutical research, and prevent natural disasters through the processing of data from satellites, sensors and drones.

GRNET Chairman emphasized that the goal is for these capabilities to translate into tangible benefits for citizens, businesses and public administration, improving quality of life, boosting innovation and creating new development prospects for the country.

As Mr. Kollias noted, the new infrastructure is expected to be available to the research and business communities by 2026, paving the way for the development of artificial intelligence applications that will help strengthen the competitiveness of the Greek economy and foster innovation with a European and international impact.
