HellasQCI Showcased at ITU “Quantum for Good” and WSIS+20 High-Level Event in Geneva

At the heart of international discussions on digital transformation, Greece made a dynamic appearance at the WSIS+20 Forum in Geneva, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), delivering a clear message: Greece is a European leader in quantum innovation.

Representing Greece, Deputy Minister of Digital Governance, Chris Dermetzopoulos, participated, on Wednesday 9 July 2025, in two key sessions (i) Leaders TalkX: Towards a safer connected world: collaborative strategies to strengthen digital trust and cyber resilience and (ii) the Ministerial Roundtable, and showcased milestones of Greece’s digital transformation, including:

  • Pharos AI Factory and the Daedalus supercomputer, which bring artificial intelligence into the public sector, research, and entrepreneurship;

  • HellasQCI, Greece’s first national quantum communication network featuring 650 km of fiber optics and Quantum Key Distribution technology; and

  • The National Strategy Framework for Combating Digital Addiction in Minors, focused on prevention and digital safety for children.

During this high-level event, it was emphasized that quantum communication and cybersecurity are paramount for safeguarding critical infrastructure and protecting sensitive data. In this context, HellasQCI — as part of the broader European Quantum Communication Infrastructure -EuroQCI- is laying the groundwork for a quantum-secure and digitally sovereign Europe, enabling trusted cross-border connectivity and strengthening resilience across national systems.

From the HellasQCI Consortium, the following representatives attended: Ms. Sofia Papathanasopoulou from the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post, Ministry of Digital Governance, Dr. Ilias Papastamatiou from GRNET, and Dr. Homer Papadopoulos from NCSRD.

About the ITU

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the United Nations agency for digital technologies, bringing together 194 Member States and over 1,000 organizations to drive global innovation and connectivity. Since 1865, the ITU has played a leading role in coordinating radio spectrum, setting international tech standards, and ensuring inclusive access to digital services—from AI and quantum tech to satellite systems and broadband networks.

About HellasQCI
HellasQCI, co-funded by the European Union, is developing Greece’s National Quantum Communication Infrastructure as part of the broader EuroQCI network. Coordinated by GRNET and supported by the Ministry of Digital Governance and the General Secretariat for Telecommunications and Post, the project aims to position Greece at the forefront of quantum technology, providing advanced solutions for the security and connectivity of critical infrastructure.

HellasQCI is a large-scale national infrastructure, consisting of 650 km of quantum-secure optical fiber, with end nodes in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Heraklion. It also connects three Optical Ground Stations (OGSs) — Helmos, Holomontas, and Skinakas — enabling the integration of terrestrial and satellite-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems, and paving the way for Greece’s role in future quantum internet and space-based communication services.
