The LLMs4EU (Large Language Models for the European Union) project aims to develop and make available Large Language Models (LLMs) and related tools for all languages of the European Union.
More specifically, the project aims to collect language data of sufficient quality and quantity to enable the creation of large language models as well as more specialized models tailored to specific languages, fields, or industries, while also providing services and support so that others can refine the available models.
At the same time, it seeks to contribute to the preservation and promotion of European linguistic and cultural diversity in the digital age, addressing the problem that some European languages – especially those with "low resources" – are at risk of being left behind in developments in artificial intelligence.
An additional goal is to ensure that European small and medium-sized enterprises have access to the tools and resources to become competitive in the field of language technologies and LLMs. These tools will cover all stages—from model training to providing support for compliance with European legislation (AI Act, GDPR, etc.).
Finally, LLMs4EU aims to support practical use cases in areas such as energy, telecommunications, tourism, public services, and science, demonstrating that LLMs can be applied in important social and economic fields.
The implementation of the project will ensure that all European Union languages have access to Large Language Models and tools, with the benefit of being able to exploit developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence without geographical and cultural restrictions in Europe.
