As part of the new GN5 Framework Partnership Agreement under Horizon Europe (GN5-FPA) and a related project to GN5-1, GN5-IC1 aims to extend and ensure the global reach of the GÉANT network by replacing and updating the existing intercontinental connectivity infrastructure.
For this purpose, the "GN5-IC" project aims to create a blueprint for the future intercontinental connectivity of the GÉANT network, so that it can continue to provide high-tech research and economically viable services for the European Research Area.
The project will significantly benefit the efficiency of the European Research Area by providing all researchers in Europe with the network, communication facilities and application access necessary to conduct the world-class research required by the objectives of the GÉANT Framework Partnership Agreement (FPA).
Furthermore, digital inclusion in research will be significantly improved as all European National Research Education Networks (NRENs) will gain improved access to global research and e-infrastructures.
GN5-IC1 will focus on identifying existing gaps in R&D connectivity, as well as future intercontinental connectivity needs, to generate long-term international planning and capacity investments in synergy with international partners, users and other initiatives.
The above benefits will be achieved by implementing the following:
- Expanding the scope of network topology and capacity planning on a global scale, taking into account the instrumental deployment and requirements from NRENs and research infrastructures provided globally as shared resources, e.g. ITER SKA LHC and others.
- Coordination of investments in network infrastructure in collaboration with global NREN peers.
- Options and decisions consistent with complementary programmes such as the " EC s Digital Decade " and " Neighbourhood Development and International Cooperation - NDICI )", Regional Recovery Funds and investments resulting from new initiatives, e.g. the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project.
