EU DIGITAL IDENTITY WALLET CONSORTIUM (EWC)

EU DIGITAL IDENTITY WALLET CONSORTIUM (EWC)
Funding
Digital Europe Programme
Duration
30/12/2022 - 30/12/2024
Description

The aim of the EWC project is to develop large pilot applications in mobile travel credentials, e-payments and organisational digital identity with applications in business travel and document exchange networks.

The project aims to promote digital transformation in Europe in 2 ways:

First, by improving citizens' access to a reliable and secure online identification that ensures privacy and gives users control over their identity data.  The EWC plans to develop the digital wallet application for use cases related to digital travel credentials .  The future intention of the project is to go beyond the simple digitisation of digital travel travel credentials purposes and to fully exploit the potential of the proposed EU Digital Identity Wallet (EDIW), which will ensure free movement across the borders, while allowing wallet holders to provide identification for themselves at work, study, when making secure payments, and even when interacting with their government online - wherever they are in Europe.

Secondly, by supporting the digital transformation of the European industrial sector.  EU Member States will offer businesses digital identity wallets that can store both recognised and unrecognised electronic certificates of attributes associated with legal entities.  The building block that the EWC project will create is the Organisational Digital Identity (ODI), which as part of the digital travel credentials package is very important as it allows a citizen to be effectively identified anywhere in Europe as a legal representative of an organisation. Specifically for small and medium-sized businesses, as well as for start-ups, this capability will be essential for their cross-border growth and high flexibility at the European level.

GRNET’s role involves participation  in the technical implementation in the 2 areas that the project targets, namely the digital wallet and digital identities for organisations.
