GRNET Participates in eduGAIN Federation Operators Training in Paris

GRNET actively participated in the eduGAIN Federation Operators Training 2026, which took place the Paris offices of RENATER, the French NREN, from 30 March to 3 April 2026, bringing together experts from the global research and education networking community to strengthen skills and collaboration in Trust and Identity services

The training, organised within the framework of the GÉANT GN5-2 project, was attended by 25 participants from identity federations and NRENs in 12 countries, and was designed for federation operators and technical staff working in identity federations, aiming to enhance operational knowledge and hands-on experience in managing federated identity infrastructures and eduGAIN services.

Representing GRNET, Zenon Mousmoulas was among a team of 8 trainers, participating with experts on federated identity infrastructures, essential for research and education.

During the five-day intensive programme, participants explored key topics related to federated identity management and the eduGAIN ecosystem, including:

  • Introduction to Federated Identity Management and Single Sign-On (SSO)
  • SAML2 protocol and emerging trends in eduGAIN
  • GÉANT Trust & Identity services and tools
  • Shibboleth Identity and Service Providers
  • Discovery Services and metadata management
  • Metadata signing and distribution processes
  • OpenID Federation
  • eduGAIN security and best practices
  • Community support and operational guidelines

The training combined theoretical sessions with practical, hands-on exercises, enabling participants to deploy Identity Providers, Service Providers, discovery services, and federation metadata in a real operational environment.
