The \u201cINdustrial Quantum ecosystem foR nExt-generAtion Secure nEtwork\u201d (INQREASE) is a European initiative that aims to develop a mature European industrial ecosystem for terrestrial quantum key distribution (QKD) with security certification, enabling their integration into existing telecommunications infrastructures.<\/p>\n
More specifically, the project will advance the development of compact, efficient, and economically viable components and systems, as well as QKD component technologies, such as integrated photonic circuits, high-speed single-photon detectors, and time-taggers, so that they reach Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) of 8\u20139, that is, to transition from the research and prototyping stage to mature technologies ready for production and deployment in real-world networks.<\/p>\n
Achieving the project\u2019s objectives will yield multiple benefits. It will guide the entire quantum technology infrastructure through rigorous security certification processes based on common criteria, in collaboration with assessment bodies, thereby developing methodologies specifically tailored to the evaluation of quantum security.<\/p>\n
By leveraging the expertise and capabilities available in Europe, INQREASE will contribute to the development and strengthening of European technologies for secure quantum communications. In this way, Europe will be able to develop these critical technologies and strengthen its cybersecurity, digital autonomy, and position in the rapidly evolving field of quantum technologies.<\/p>\n
As part of the INQREASE project, GRNET will participate in the work packages related to the integration and development of the systems, as well as security certification.<\/p>\n
Leveraging its existing infrastructure and expertise, GRNET will lead the testing and practical demonstrations of the technology. In particular, it will coordinate the relevant activities among the project\u2019s four testbed infrastructures: HellasQCI in Greece, the Madrid Quantum Network in Spain, and the infrastructures of the University of Padua and Leonardo in Italy<\/b>. The goal is to confirm in practice that different technologies and infrastructures can interoperate securely and effectively, as well as to evaluate the operation of hybrid secure communications on a large scale.<\/p>\n
In addition, GRNET will contribute to defining the requirements for integrating QKD technology into existing telecommunications networks, as well as to the testing and certification procedures for QKD devices.
