<\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b><\/b>SEEWQCI<\/b><\/a> and<\/span> HellasQCI<\/b><\/a>, both coordinated by<\/span> GRNET<\/span><\/a>, participated in <\/span>QCI Days 2026<\/b>, held from <\/span>28 to 30 September 2026<\/b> at the Centro Congressi Fiera di Padova in Padua, Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Organised by the<\/span> AIT Austrian Institute of Technology<\/span><\/a> and hosted by<\/span> ThinkQuantum<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> Officina Stellare<\/span><\/a>, the event brought together the European quantum communication community to discuss the latest developments and deployments, focusing on CEF Digital\/EuroQCI projects and IRIS\u00b2 Quantum Communication Infrastructure initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

On 29 September, <\/span>Dr.<\/b><\/b><\/b> <\/b>Ilias Papastamatiou<\/b>, Senior Project Manager and Technical Lead Net\/Quantum at GRNET, Coordinator of SEEWQCI & HellasQCI and Greece\u2019s National Representative in the TransEuroOGS project, delivered a presentation entitled <\/span>\u201cSEEWQCI: From National QCI Deployments to Cross-Border Quantum Communications\u201d<\/b> during the session <\/span>\u201cTransitioning from National to Cross-Border Networks\u201d<\/span><\/i>, featuring Digital Europe Programme (DEP) and Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) projects.<\/span> He highlighted how <\/span>SEEWQCI<\/b> builds on national initiatives, including <\/span>HellasQCI\u2019s<\/b> Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which spans over <\/span>700<\/b> km<\/b>, connects <\/span>26 governmental<\/b>, <\/span>academic and research nodes<\/b>, and provides terrestrial connectivity towards Greece\u2019s three Optical Ground Stations.<\/span> Building on this experience, SEEWQCI advances terrestrial and space-based quantum connectivity across <\/span>Greece<\/b>, <\/span>Bulgaria<\/b>, <\/span>Cyprus <\/b>and <\/span>the Netherlands<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The same session featured presentations of national QCI initiatives under the <\/span>Digital Europe Programme (DEP)<\/b>, including <\/span>HellasQCI<\/b>, presented by <\/span>Prof.<\/b><\/b><\/b> <\/b>George Kanellos<\/b>, Professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and HellasQCI Project Technical Coordinator, and <\/span>CYQCI<\/b><\/a>, presented by <\/span>Prof.<\/b><\/b><\/b> <\/b>Kyriacos Kalli<\/b>, Professor at Cyprus University of Technology and CYQCI Coordinator.<\/span> Their contributions highlighted the role of national deployments in supporting cross-border initiatives such as SEEWQCI, funded under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).<\/span><\/p>\n

On 30 September, during the event\u2019s third day, themed <\/span>\u201cPractical Experience and Next Steps\u201d<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Dr.<\/b><\/b><\/b> <\/b>Papastamatiou<\/b> participated in the panel discussion <\/span>\u201cEuroQCI non-classified: Acceptance, Experiences, and Future Directions\u201d<\/b>, alongside <\/span>Dr.<\/b><\/b><\/b> <\/b>Catarina Cabral Bastos<\/b>, <\/span>Ingrid Linnas <\/b>and <\/span>Piotr Rydlichowski<\/b>.<\/span> The panel explored QKD use cases, experiences from ongoing deployments and the transition towards operational quantum-secured services, with a focus on <\/span>user requirements and acceptance, interoperability, reliability, certification and trust<\/b>.<\/span> The discussion also emphasised the importance of involving end users in developing solutions that can be effectively integrated into existing communication environments.<\/span><\/p>\n

QCI Days 2026 provided an opportunity to share experiences from national QKD deployments, address operational challenges and user requirements, and strengthen European collaboration towards interoperable cross-border infrastructures and reliable quantum-secured services.<\/span><\/p>\n
