{"id":22098,"date":"2026-02-25T22:01:44","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T20:01:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grnet.gr\/?p=22098"},"modified":"2026-02-25T22:06:38","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T20:06:38","slug":"seewqci-kickoff-announcement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/grnet.gr\/en\/2026\/02\/25\/seewqci-kickoff-announcement\/","title":{"rendered":"SEEWQCI Kick-off Meeting 26-27 February 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>South-East Europe to Western Europe Quantum Communication Infrastructure<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seewqci.eu\/\">SEEWQCI<\/a>) project, coordinated by the National Infrastructures for Research and Technology (GRNET) with the support of the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post, <strong>officially launches its activities<\/strong> on <strong>26-27 February 2026<\/strong> in <strong>Athens<\/strong>, marking a major milestone in Europe\u2019s effort to build secure digital communications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project represents the <\/span><b>next implementation phase of the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>EuroQCI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Following the deployment of National Quantum Communication Infrastructures (<\/span><b>NatQCIs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) across Member States, the focus now moves toward interconnecting these networks, validating interoperability, and delivering cross-border quantum communication services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEEWQCI is a landmark cross-border initiative that interconnects the National Quantum Communication Infrastructures of Greece (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hellasqci.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HellasQCI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Cyprus (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyqci.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CYQCI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Bulgaria (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/euroqci.bg\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BGQCI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the Netherlands (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/quantumdelta.nl\/qcined\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NL-QCI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), establishing a scalable quantum corridor for secure data transmission across South-Eastern and Western Europe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEEWQCI establishes a 1,100 km cross-border terrestrial QKD backbone between Greece and Bulgaria, positioning Greece as the gateway of the South-East Europe Quantum Corridor and laying the foundation for expansion toward Central and Western Europe. In parallel, the project deploys satellite and hybrid quantum connectivity through five Optical Ground Stations, enabling space-based links between Greece, the Netherlands, and Cyprus, as well as hybrid terrestrial\u2013space connections between Bulgaria, the Netherlands, and Cyprus via Greece.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Building Europe\u2019s Quantum-Secure Backbone<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the second implementation phase of the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI), SEEWQCI contributes to a continental network combining:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terrestrial quantum-secure fibre links, including the Greece\u2013Bulgaria corridor\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Space-based quantum communications, via Optical Ground Stations in Greece, Cyprus and the Netherlands<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integration with the European EAGLE-1 quantum satellite, extending secure communications beyond terrestrial limits<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This hybrid terrestrial-space architecture will enable the secure transmission of sensitive data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Project Scale &amp; European Cooperation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEEWQCI is implemented by a consortium of 15 core partners and 7 supporting organisations from Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and the Netherlands, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ministries and National Security Authorities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Security Operations Centres (SOCs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research &amp; Technology Organisations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industrial partners<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project will deploy a 1,100 km terrestrial QKD corridor, integrate five Optical Ground Stations, and implement more than 29 quantum-secure use cases across over 35 trusted nodes, testing terrestrial, satellite and hybrid connectivity scenarios.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kick-off Meeting Programme Highlights<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opening session includes remarks from government representatives, national authorities, research organisations and the European Commission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two high-level panels will take place:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>High-Level Institutional Panel (10:40\u201311:10)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Focus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: EuroQCI strategic dimension\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EuroQCI CEF Projects Panel (12:40\u201313:10)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Focus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: coordination among parallel CEF quantum infrastructure projects, cross-border cooperation and interoperability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representatives from multiple EuroQCI projects -including TransEuroOGS, SBIQCI, BAT-QCI, QUAPITAL, PIONIER-Q-SAT, ROGS, IberianQCI, QRUSOE, BeneluxQCI, QCI-AT-CZ-PL &amp; QCI-SK-CZ-PL, CEQCI-\u00a0 will participate, highlighting the cohesion of Europe\u2019s quantum ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This collective presence reinforces mutual trust, cross-border alignment, and coordinated implementation across Member States, while positioning Greece as a reliable and active hub within the evolving EuroQCI initiative.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>SEEWQCI within EuroQCI &amp; Europe\u2019s Digital Decade<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEEWQCI aligns with the EuroQCI vision to protect communications, sensitive data and critical infrastructure using Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) &#8211; a quantum physics-based technology capable of detecting interception attempts.
