{"id":20420,"date":"2025-07-15T15:54:24","date_gmt":"2025-07-15T12:54:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grnet.gr\/?p=20420"},"modified":"2025-07-15T15:54:24","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T12:54:24","slug":"hellasqci-showcased-at-itu-quantum-for-good-and-wsis20-high-level-event-in-geneva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/grnet.gr\/en\/2025\/07\/15\/hellasqci-showcased-at-itu-quantum-for-good-and-wsis20-high-level-event-in-geneva\/","title":{"rendered":"HellasQCI Showcased at ITU \u201cQuantum for Good\u201d and WSIS+20 High-Level Event in Geneva"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the heart of international discussions on digital transformation, Greece made a dynamic appearance at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/net4\/wsis\/forum\/2025\/\"><b>WSIS+20 Forum<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Geneva, organized by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/Pages\/default.aspx\"><b>International Telecommunication Union<\/b><\/a><b> (ITU)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, delivering a clear message: Greece is a European leader in quantum innovation.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representing Greece, <\/span><b>Deputy Minister of Digital Governance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Chris Dermetzopoulos, participated, on Wednesday 9 July 2025, in two key sessions (i) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/net4\/wsis\/forum\/2025\/Agenda\/Session\/421\"><b>Leaders TalkX<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Towards a safer connected world: collaborative strategies to strengthen digital trust and cyber resilience and (ii) the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/net4\/wsis\/forum\/2025\/Agenda\/Session\/183\"><b>Ministerial Roundtable<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and showcased milestones of Greece\u2019s digital transformation, including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pharos AI Factory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Daedalus <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supercomputer, which bring artificial intelligence into the public sector, research, and entrepreneurship; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>HellasQCI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Greece\u2019s first national quantum communication network featuring 650 km of fiber optics and Quantum Key Distribution technology; and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>National Strategy Framework<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Combating <\/span><b>Digital Addiction in Minors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, focused on prevention and digital safety for children.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this high-level event, it was emphasized that quantum communication and cybersecurity are paramount for <\/span><b>safeguarding critical infrastructure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>protecting sensitive data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this context, HellasQCI \u2014 as part of the broader European Quantum Communication Infrastructure -EuroQCI- is laying the groundwork for a<\/span><b> quantum-secure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>digitally sovereign Europe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, enabling trusted cross-border connectivity and strengthening resilience across national systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the HellasQCI Consortium, the following representatives attended: <\/span><b>Ms. Sofia Papathanasopoulou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post, Ministry of Digital Governance, <\/span><b>Dr. Ilias Papastamatiou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from GRNET, and <\/span><b>Dr. Homer Papadopoulos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from NCSRD.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>About the ITU<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the <\/span><b>United Nations agency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><b>digital technologies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, bringing together 194 Member States and over 1,000 organizations to drive global innovation and connectivity. Since 1865, the ITU has played a leading role in coordinating radio spectrum, setting international tech standards, and ensuring inclusive access to digital services\u2014from AI and quantum tech to satellite systems and broadband networks.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>About HellasQCI <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HellasQCI, co-funded by the European Union, is developing Greece\u2019s National Quantum Communication Infrastructure as part of the broader EuroQCI network. Coordinated by GRNET and supported by the Ministry of Digital Governance and the General Secretariat for Telecommunications and Post, the project aims to position Greece at the forefront of quantum technology, providing advanced solutions for the security and connectivity of critical infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HellasQCI is a large-scale national infrastructure, consisting of 650 km of quantum-secure optical fiber, with end nodes in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Heraklion.
